The district and the city are not the same place

Kathmandu District contains Kathmandu Metropolitan City, but the district also includes ten other municipalities, among them Kirtipur, Tokha, Budhanilakantha and Dakshinkali. An address that says only Kathmandu may therefore be too broad to identify a family's locality. A ward, municipality or older village name can make the location more precise.

What the 2021 census measures

The National Statistics Office counted 2,041,587 district residents in 2021, compared with 1,744,240 in the 2011 census. Table 15 reports 544,867 households, an average household size of 3.75, and a population density of 5,169 people per square kilometre. These are district-wide figures, not figures for Kathmandu Metropolitan City alone. They describe where people usually lived at the census date, not the ancestral origin of everyone who lived there. When comparing a family document with a current address, first identify its municipality and ward, then check whether the document used an older administrative name.
