Four municipalities within one district

Bhaktapur District includes Bhaktapur, Changunarayan, Madhyapur Thimi and Suryabinayak municipalities. Bhaktapur Municipality is only one part of the district. For a family record, identifying which municipality and ward an address refers to is more useful than treating the district name as a precise location.

A rapidly changing census area

The National Statistics Office recorded 432,132 district residents in 2021, up from 304,651 in 2011. Its Table 15 gives 108,503 households, an average household size of 3.98 and a density of 3,631 people per square kilometre. The reported annual population growth rate of 3.35% was the highest among Nepal's districts for that census period. That growth does not show where an individual family originated: the census is a count of usual residents, not a lineage register. Older deeds, citizenship records or family accounts may use a settlement or former local-unit name that needs to be matched to today's municipality.
